With schools closing across the country due to the corona
virus outbreak, public schools vary widely in what they offer. School districts
have a legal obligation to provide equitable learning opportunities and it can
be difficult for schools to guarantee access to necessary materials, such as
laptops and WiFi, for all students, with some simply providing optional courses
in "enrichment". If you are one of the parents who now primarily
teach their children at home, we have some tips to help you keep your children
engaged and all sane.
Play with your strengths
We had all these subjects at school that we love and others
that we just couldn`t understand. We all have different strengths, and in this
situation, playing with those strengths is a crucial way to overcome and
relieve some of the pressure.
Plan some activities every day
Children who attend an online school or are home schooled do
not have strict hours and schedules. They can learn whenever they want. But
some students, especially those who are younger, are still not used to managing
their personal time on their own. Too much free time can sometimes lead to
procrastination. Children thrive when they have a consistent and reliable
routine. While it is difficult to create a strict schedule in such circumstances,
home education experts agree that planning at least some activities at the same
time each day can help. It could simply be making sure children wake up and go
to bed at a certain time and eat around the same time every day.
Children`s interests
Connect your children`s learning to their interests to
engage and keep them interested. Ask them to write a letter to a dear relative
or friend to strengthen their writing skills. If you like dinosaurs, add,
subtract, multiply, and divide groups of dinosaurs to learn math.
Take advantage of free educational
resources
Several educational companies offer free lesson plans and
activities for children who are trapped at home. The academies offer daily
schedules prepared for children from 4 to 18 years old. Scholastic has
developed a Learn from Home program and publishes programming one week at a
time. It is also a useful source that parents can use for educational
materials. The platform serves as a marketplace for teachers to sell their
virtual lesson plans, worksheets, and field guides.
Teach them independence
Now is a good time to support your children`s self-help
skills development, such as making your own breakfast and lunch, making your
beds, and tying your shoelaces.
Test and projects
One thing that all homeschooling parents will want to know
is whether their condition requires them to submit standardized test results.
Several states do not require that homeschool children be screened. Other
states require that home schooled children take all standardized tests given to
public school students, or receive another state-approved standardized test at
regular intervals. In some cases, parents have the option to waive the
standardized test requirement if they agree to have a teacher`s, principal`s,
or certified principal or advisory committee established for that purpose
review their child`s progress.
Try group activities online
To allow children to continue socializing while being
isolated at home, parents can turn to sites that offer a wide range of remote
group activities, including guitar learning and video editing. They can see
each other, talk and collaborate as they would in the classroom.
Record Keeping
Records that may be required of home school parents include
attendance records, immunization records, quarterly progress reports, summaries
of used textbooks and programs, records of reading, test results, or writing
samples or other job. In others, record keeping is a big part of homeschooling.
Arrange the learning environment
Now that you`ve helped your child determine when and how
long she goes to school online every day, it`s time for us to take care of the
environment. An academy allows its students to learn in the comfort of their
own homes, in the place that suits them best. All they need is a computer or a laptop.
The space in which a student learns should be good to study, next to a window,
if possible, without distractions and with a strong Internet connection.
Be kind to yourself and your child
It is a very stressful time. If you need to edit a movie to
get through the day, that`s fine. You don`t have to go to home schooling if it
is really going to cause serious emotional distress for everyone involved. And
we think it is very important that parents listen now because we all feel a lot
of personal pressure.
Be present and available to help
If your child finds a particular task difficult or has
questions, he or she will probably be the first person to ask. For this reason,
prepare for the lessons the day before, be available, and if you don`t know an
answer, work with your children to find the solution together.
Offer rewards
Consider offering rewards to encourage homework completion -
these are not regular days and your children may need additional encouragement.
Encourage them to make lists of movies they would like to see or games they
would like to play. There are several learning games that allow students to
strengthen their knowledge while having fun.
